🍺Typehype community feedback and suggestions

This is already a better forum experience than I have ever had (not counting bugs and the fact this is not 100% complete).

Easier to post. Easier to attach images. Links can automatically take the text form. Auto max-width on images will also be a huge benefit as disucssed.

Those dragging handles to make post boxes bigger will be good to have. Sometimes it's nice having extra space even if you aren't using it all. Am I the only one that does it?

Future feature idea:

* Shortcut bar that the user can set. Located at the top so it's always visible on every page. By default it is inactive.

Example use: sticking your most frequented subforums or threads so you have quick, direct access no matter where you are. And again, optional.

* Idea 2 - can you make asterix automatically make lists like on reddit?

The asterisk to make lists is from markdown and it would be cool if that was implemented here, would be easier to post and format.

Thanks Ninja, glad you're enjoying it so far.

Most forums tend to use bbCode since it's a better defined standard and a weird tradition at this point. You can use the editor toolbar to create lists, or bbCode directly in posts like:
Code:
[LIST]
[*]Bullet 1
[*]Bullet 2
[/LIST]
Which outputs:
  • Bullet 1
  • Bullet 2

I prefer markdown myself, the implementations just tend to be a bit of a mess. It's something we'll keep in mind for the future.

We also have syntax highlighting for most languages:
XML:
<xf:if is="!$attachment">
    <a href="{{ link('full:attachments', {'attachment_id': $id}) }}" target="_blank">{{ phrase('view_attachment_x', {'name': $id}) }}</a>
<xf:elseif is="$canView"/>
    <a href="{{ link('full:attachments', $attachment, {'hash': $attachment.temp_hash}) }}" target="_blank" class="TH-attachment">
        <img src="{$attachment.thumbnail_url}" class="TH-attachment__image" alt="{$attachment.filename}" />
    </a>
</xf:if>

Forum looks great, feels much more modern. Here are a few feature suggestions:
  • A 'Popular Posts/Topics' option under LATEST. Always wanted to see this in a forum, would allow the user to see what the current buzz is in a reddit-like way. Could use user watch counts or count the frequency of recent posts to determine popularity.
  • Would be really nice to see group buy posts standardized in some way. This would mean that the submitter inputs their group buy images, description, ship date, specs, link to vendor page, etc all in different form fields, so they GB posts can display this information in a uniform way. Maybe allow user to collapse sections of the GB post as well. This would prevent having to scroll past 10 images to find the description, for one use case. Otherwise, it just looks more professional.
  • Same as above, but for Interest Checks.
  • Interest check voting system, or maybe a button to commit, like on massdrop. Would make raffles/FCFS easier, as well as determining interest
  • Track sales on the market like r/mm does, display that information when a user posts in the market, and on their profile.

LMK if you guys want some more hands at some point. Never used XenForo, but I have some PHP and forums experience.

Great feedback, thanks...

One more suggestion that drives me crazy that most forums don't have: allow user to sort the new posts page by OP date/time as well as latest post date/time
I think we actually have this already, but the filtering UI was hidden temporarily due to some breakage :D

On main page, if you click on the category header, collapse/expand the boards under them? e.g. on Vendors, if there is a lot of vendors, you would collapse it down and it'd only show one var of Vendors. Save scrolling I guess and neatens it up if you're not interested in seeing vendors until you are looking to buy etc.?

Would it be possible to ask vendors to specify the currency when they list an item or post about a group buy? I figure we can just assume that private sellers will list their items in AUD if they're in Australia, but when a vendor provides a price (especially with a Typehype exclusive coupon) it's not as clear.

As an example, I was just looking at the Treasure Type-9 macropad and the currency isn't listed anywhere in its post. I assume the price will be in USD since that's the default international currency, but the website has a Canadian TLD and Typehype is Australian.

Sounds good, added to the list.

Could you add a "Services" subsection to the Marketplace section? I've noticed a few people offering soldering/desoldering/etc on the Discord channel and Facebook group and I think having a place for it here would be really useful.

How about a bot that replicates posts from /r/mm and puts them here. So if you visit this page, you will also have all the /r/mm posts. So if you are just browsing, you don't even need to go to reddit.

Sounds like a good idea, we'll likely wait until there's more listings and then add the prefix for it.

So they'd all be listed by the bot? Seems like it could end up being a really high volume of posts getting pulled in. Were you thinking of having one thread for this?

Are we gonna do # of posts under user names in the future? Most other forums have this
Probably not, since we're aiming to keep the vertical size of posts even more compact than it is now. What we will be expanding on is member-card features (when you hover or click an avatar it appears), and also what's contained on member profiles too.

We've been working on hard on the next UI update that further cleans up many of the layouts and improves our mobile experience.
